feat(storage): S3 storage and temporary signed screenshot URLs - #412
Adds S3-compatible object storage (AWS S3, MinIO, …) for screenshots, attachments and reports, and switches screenshot delivery to temporary signed URLs (10 minutes) for both the local disk and S3. This is the application side of the s3 storage mode of the Helm chart rework (#401, #376), where web, queue and scheduler run in separate Pods and no longer share a local volume.
Why
Screenshots, attachments and reports were read via Storage::path() as local files (Image::make(Storage::path(...)), response()->file(), disk_free_space(), mail attachments from a local path). That breaks on any non-local disk.
Screenshots were downloaded by the frontend through the API with the bearer token into a blob. With object storage every image would be proxied through Octane workers. Signed URLs let the browser load images directly (<img src>), from S3 or from a signed app route, without the token.
has_screenshot on time intervals was always true: the accessor read a non-existent column (!$value || … short-circuits), and nothing in the server frontend, the desktop app or node-cattr reads it. It is removed instead of being made correct (on S3 a correct version would cost one HEAD request per interval).
Changes
Storage configuration (config/filesystems.php)
S3 disk factory with AWS_ENDPOINT, AWS_USE_PATH_STYLE_ENDPOINT (MinIO), AWS_ROOT (key prefix), AWS_TEMPORARY_URL; AWS_DEFAULT_REGION defaults to us-east-1.
Screenshots use the default disk (FILESYSTEM_DISK); new ATTACHMENTS_DISK and REPORTS_DISK (default local, behaviour unchanged).
Thumbnails are generated from Storage::get() instead of a local path; upload temp files are kept explicitly on the local disk (offline sync too).
time-intervals/list and time-intervals/show return screenshot_url and thumbnail_url (TTL 10 min, ScreenshotService::URL_TTL_MINUTES): a relative URL::temporarySignedRoute on the local disk, Storage::temporaryUrl() on S3.
GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot|thumb no longer require the bearer token: access is granted by the signature, which covers the interval id; unsigned, tampered or expired → 403, missing file → 404. Files are streamed with Storage::response().
The public routes are rate limited per IP by the named limiter screenshots (SCREENSHOTS_RATE_LIMIT, default 600/min: a timeline day with a 1-minute screenshot interval shows up to ~600 thumbnails; raise it for offices behind NAT).
New authenticated GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot-urls (same view policy as before) returns fresh URLs. The frontend uses it for expired URLs and for report payloads (dashboard, project report), where URLs are deliberately not embedded: those payloads come from project-scoped queries without the interval access scope, and embedding would also mean thousands of signatures per dashboard.
has_screenshot removed from the model and API docs. The offline-sync request field has_screenshot sent by the desktop app is unchanged.
Frontend
AppImage loads the URL directly as <img src> (no axios blob). services/screenshot-url.service.js returns the payload URL while valid, otherwise fetches and caches fresh URLs for expires_in. On a load error it retries once and only if the URL has actually expired (parsed from expires or X-Amz-Date/X-Amz-Expires), so a missing screenshot causes no extra requests.
thumbnailPathProvider / screenshotPathProvider stay as extension points but now resolve to a Promise of the URL (no module overrides them).
Attachments
Temporary links are disk-agnostic: presigned on S3 (with Content-Disposition / Content-Type), the existing signed app route on the local disk.
Maximum lifetime is 7 days on every disk (S3 presigning limit): seconds > 604800 is a validation error. The UI options are 1h / 7h / 7d (the 14-day option is removed).
Reports
New reports disk. Local behaviour is unchanged; on S3 the download link is presigned for 10 minutes and the report e-mail attaches the file via Attachment::fromStorageDisk.
Screenshot rotation
StorageCleaner is a no-op on non-local disks (no disk_free_space(), no per-interval existence checks); about/storage gains rotation_supported. Use bucket lifecycle rules on S3 (documented).
API: has_screenshot is removed from time interval responses.
API: GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot|thumb accept only signed URLs (bearer tokens no longer work); clients must use screenshot_url / thumbnail_url or screenshot-urls. The desktop app and node-cattr do not call these endpoints.
Frontend extension points thumbnailPathProvider / screenshotPathProvider return a Promise instead of an API path.
New env vars: ATTACHMENTS_DISK, REPORTS_DISK, AWS_ROOT, AWS_TEMPORARY_URL, SCREENSHOTS_RATE_LIMIT.
Tests
PHPUnit: 350 tests / 1716 assertions on main → 380 / 1862, all green (local disk, MySQL 8.4). New: tests/Feature/TimeIntervals/ScreenshotTest.php, tests/Feature/Storage/{AttachmentStorageTest,ReportStorageTest,StorageCleanerTest}.php — signed URLs in list/show, exact 10-minute TTL (valid after 9 min, 403 after 11), 403 for unsigned / other interval / expired, 404 for a missing file, screenshot-urls auth and scope, uploads and thumbnails on local and fake S3, presigned payload URLs on S3, attachment presign up to 7 days and validation above, report URLs and mail attachment from the disk, rotation no-op on S3, per-IP throttling with a shared budget for thumb and screenshot.
Manual check against a disposable MinIO (bitnamilegacy/minio:2025.7.23, path-style, AWS_ROOT=cattr-test): interval with screenshot → object in the bucket, thumbnail generated by queue:work; presigned URLs 200, bare object URL / tampered / expired 403; report download presigned with the right Content-Disposition, report mail attached from S3; attachment moved and its sha512/256 hash verified from the S3 stream; about/storage → rotation_supported: false.
Deployments switching an existing installation to S3 must copy storage/app/screenshots and storage/app/attachments to the bucket (same keys under AWS_ROOT), e.g. with mc mirror.
Screenshots and thumbnails use temporary links that refresh when they expire. Interval responses include screenshot and thumbnail URLs.
Attachments and reports can be stored in S3-compatible storage and served through temporary download links. Attachment links can last up to seven days; report links last 10 minutes.
Storage information indicates whether screenshot rotation is supported.
Changes
Screenshot rotation is supported only on local storage. For object storage, use bucket lifecycle rules to manage retention.
Attachment link durations must be between one second and seven days. Links are available only for attachments with a good status; files that fail verification are quarantined.

Walkthrough
The change adds S3-compatible storage for screenshots, attachments, and reports. It adds temporary URLs, limits screenshot rotation to local storage, and updates frontend screenshot loading to resolve and refresh expiring URLs.
Changes: Configurable storage and temporary URLs
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Configure local and S3 storage composer.json, config/filesystems.php, docs/developer/*/backend/*
Adds shared S3 configuration and disk selection for attachments and reports. The backend guides describe storage locations, settings, URL behavior, and disk-specific behavior.
Restrict screenshot rotation to local storage app/Helpers/StorageHelper.php, app/Helpers/StorageCleaner.php, app/Console/Commands/RotateScreenshots.php, app/Http/Controllers/Api/AboutController.php, tests/Feature/Storage/StorageCleanerTest.php
Rotation and space reporting indicate unsupported storage on non-local disks. The command exits without thinning there, and the storage response reports whether rotation is supported.
List and show responses provide temporary screenshot and thumbnail URLs. Local URLs use signed streaming routes; other disks use temporary storage URLs. An authenticated refresh endpoint and per-IP route limit are added.
The frontend resolves screenshot URLs from interval data or the refresh API, caches fetched URLs, and retries an image once when its URL is expired.
Issue attachment URLs and quarantine BAD files app/Contracts/AttachmentService.php, app/Services/AttachmentService.php, app/Http/Controllers/Api/AttachmentController.php, app/Http/Requests/Attachment/DownloadAttachmentRequest.php, app/Console/Commands/FindSusFiles.php, resources/frontend/core/modules/Tasks/components/Attachments.vue, tests/Feature/Storage/AttachmentStorageTest.php
Attachment URLs use signed local routes or presigned URLs, with lifetimes limited to seven days. Hash verification moves BAD attachments to quarantine, and deletion and scanning include quarantined files.
Store and deliver reports from configured disks app/Jobs/GenerateAndSendReport.php, app/Notifications/ReportGenerated.php, tests/Feature/Storage/ReportStorageTest.php
Reports use the reports disk and ten-minute URLs for non-local storage. Report emails attach files read from that disk through a checked temporary stream.
cattr-app/server-application#411: Both changes relate to HTTP status and header handling for signed screenshot requests and throttling.

- config: screenshots on the default disk (FILESYSTEM_DISK), new
ATTACHMENTS_DISK and REPORTS_DISK switches (local | s3); all S3 disks
share one bucket with AWS_ROOT / attachments / reports prefixes,
AWS_TEMPORARY_URL for presigned links, path-style for MinIO.
- Screenshots: the thumbnail is generated from the stored bytes, uploads
and offline-sync archives stay on the local disk explicitly, so the
default disk may be S3.
- Interval payloads of time-intervals/list|show carry screenshot_url and
thumbnail_url valid for 10 minutes: relative signed routes on the local
disk (GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot|thumb, no bearer token,
403 on a missing, foreign or expired signature), presigned object URLs
on S3. GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot-urls returns fresh ones.
- Attachments: presigned download URL on S3 (signed app route beyond the
7-day S3 limit). Reports: presigned URL (10 min) on S3, the e-mail
attaches the file from the reports disk.
- Screenshot rotation is a no-op on object storage (bucket lifecycle
rules instead); about/storage reports rotation_supported.
BREAKING CHANGE: the has_screenshot attribute is removed from time
interval responses (the offline-sync request field stays). GET
time-intervals/{id}/screenshot and /thumb no longer accept a bearer
token, only a temporary signed URL.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
AppImage no longer downloads screenshots with the bearer token into blob
URLs. Screenshot / ScreenshotModal resolve a URL for <img src>: the
screenshot_url / thumbnail_url of the interval payload while valid,
otherwise (dashboard and project report payloads, expired URLs) fresh
ones from time-intervals/{id}/screenshot-urls, cached per interval for
their lifetime. An image that fails to load with an expired URL is
retried once with a fresh one. thumbnailPathProvider /
screenshotPathProvider now resolve to such URLs.
Attachment links: copy absolute (S3) URLs as is.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
"seconds" of attachment/{id}/temporary-url is validated as 1..604800
(AttachmentService::MAX_TEMPORARY_URL_SECONDS, the S3 presigning
limit); larger values are a validation error. S3 always presigns now,
the fallback to the signed app route beyond 7 days is gone. The UI
drops its 14-day option (7 days was already offered).
BREAKING CHANGE: temporary-url rejects seconds above 604800.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GET time-intervals/{id}/screenshot|thumb get a named "screenshots"
rate limiter: per IP (no user on these routes), shared by both routes,
SCREENSHOTS_RATE_LIMIT requests per minute, 600 by default. A timeline
day of a user with 1-minute screenshots holds up to ~600 thumbnails, so
a full page still loads; the API groups' 120/min would break it.

On S3 createTemporaryUrl() presigned any attachment, including PROCESSING
and BAD ones, for up to seven days, while the local download route serves
only GOOD files. Return 404 for non-GOOD attachments before the
disk-specific branch so both disks behave the same.
Caddy is always the direct peer of Octane, so request()->ip() was
127.0.0.1 for every client: the per-IP screenshots rate limit (and the
recaptcha keys) were shared by all users. Trust 127.0.0.1 so the client
address from X-Forwarded-For is used; forged headers from other peers are
still ignored.
Laravel presigns against AWS_ENDPOINT and only then swaps scheme, host and
port for AWS_TEMPORARY_URL, while SigV4 signs the Host. Recommend an
endpoint reachable from Pods and browsers and AWS_TEMPORARY_URL only behind
a proxy that forwards the signed Host.

Behind a trusted ingress Caddy appended the ingress Pod to
X-Forwarded-For (client, ingress) and Laravel, which trusts only the
bundled Caddy, took the ingress IP as the client. Overwrite
X-Forwarded-For with {client_ip} (resolved against trusted_proxies) on

Attachment::fromStorageDisk() loaded the report with Storage::get() and
Symfony base64-encoded the string in memory (~5x the file size at peak).
Copy readStream() into a seekable php://temp and attach the resource, so

A presigned S3 URL issued while an attachment was GOOD kept working after
verifyHash() marked it BAD. On the GOOD -> BAD transition the object is now
moved to quarantine/projects/<project>/<id> on the same disk, so earlier
URLs point at a missing key and the file is kept for inspection. A failed
or incomplete move throws and leaves the status GOOD, so the job is
retried. getPath() returns the quarantine key for BAD attachments, so
deletion, project moves, project cleanup and find-sus-files follow it.
BAD stays final on re-verification.
bufferReport() now throws when the buffer cannot be opened or when the
bytes copied from the disk differ from the stored size. The s3 test case
uses a non-seekable stream like an S3 GetObject body.
