feat(about): auto-refresh screenshot cleanup status - #451
StorageCleaner wrote thinning_now / last_thin to Cache::store('octane'). That cache is per-process, so the web container never saw anything the queue worker wrote.
POST about/storage used Artisan::queue(). The queued command has no timeout of its own, so queue:work (default 60 s) killed long cleanups. It also has no failed() hook, so nothing cleared the status after that.
The storage tab fetched data only on mount, and after a request it set thinning.now = true locally, even though the job had only been queued.
Changes
Backend
App\Helpers\StorageCleanupStatus: keeps the status in the default cache store, which is shared in every supported deployment (pvc mode: storage/framework/cache on the shared PVC; s3 mode: Redis; docker-compose: a single container). The same store provides the locks.
queue() checks the current status and starts a new run (its id is stored with the status) under a short state lock. If a cleanup is already queued or running, it does nothing.
A stale queued (no worker picked it up within cleaner.queued_timeout) is reported as failed. So is a running cleanup with no heartbeat within cleaner.running_timeout. In both cases the admin can request the cleanup again.
A run's lock is never taken away. A stale run is not necessarily dead, so a new request waits for the lock (cleaner.lock_wait). If the lock stays held, the request is reported as failed rather than running next to the old run.
The run lock is owned by the run id. The heartbeat and the outcome are written only while the status belongs to that run, so a replaced run that is still alive can't overwrite the new request. failRun($runId) fails only its own run and releases only a lock it owns.
markRunning() checks under the state lock that a requested run is still the current one. A job of a replaced request exits without touching anything.
App\Jobs\RotateScreenshots replaces Artisan::queue(). It carries the run id and has tries = 1, timeout = cleaner.job_timeout (900 s, below QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER) and failOnTimeout. failed() calls failRun(), including when the worker kills the job on timeout.
cattr:screenshots:rotate [--run=<id>]:
Takes the run lock. A requested run waits for it; a scheduled run that finds it held exits.
Records skipped when thinning is not needed or rotation is not supported.
Records running, with a heartbeat while screenshots are looked up and after each removed page, then completed (which also updates last).
On an exception it records failed and rethrows. The lock is released in finally.
The weekly scheduled run (no --run, so it gets its own id) reports through the same status.
GET about/storage: space, screenshots_available, thinning.now and thinning.last stay as they were.
now is true only while the cleanup is actually running.
last changes only after a successful run.
New fields: thinning.status, thinning.requested_at, thinning.finished_at.
POST about/storage still returns 204 and is idempotent: no second job is queued while one is queued or running. If dispatching fails, that run is marked failed and the error is returned. Both endpoints still use ManageStorageRequest (admin only).
New optional env vars, documented in .env.example:
CLEANER_JOB_TIMEOUT
CLEANER_QUEUED_TIMEOUT
CLEANER_RUNNING_TIMEOUT (kept at least CLEANER_JOB_TIMEOUT + 60)
CLEANER_LOCK_WAIT
Frontend
utils/storageCleanup.js contains the polling logic, with no framework code:
Polls every 10 s while a cleanup is queued, running or the last poll failed; every 60 s when idle.
Does not poll while the page is hidden.
Ignores responses that are older than one already applied, and responses to requests sent before a cleanup request (invalidate()).
Applies nothing after stop().
StorageManagementTab.vue:
After a 204 it shows "Queued", not "started". It then shows the status the server reports (queued / in progress / completed / not needed / failed).
Completed, skipped and failed messages appear only when the backend reports that status after the tab saw the cleanup active.
The updated last, space and eligible-screenshot count come from the same response.
The button stays disabled while a request is in flight or a cleanup is active.
Permissions for GET and POST (guest, non-admin, admin).
Response compatibility; a request is reported as queued, not running.
Duplicate requests queue one job; the job runs the cleanup and passes its run to the command.
Completed and skipped (threshold not reached) runs.
An exception marks the run failed and releases the lock; a scheduled run backs off while the lock is held.
Stale queued and dead running cleanups are reported as failed and can be requested again; heartbeats keep a long run alive.
failed() on timeout; a failed job of a lost run doesn't touch the new run; the job's timeout settings.
A replaced request's job doesn't take over the new request.
A current request isn't dropped while the lock is held.
A live replaced run neither runs next to the new request nor overwrites its status.
Cross-process: the web process queues the cleanup, a separate php artisan cattr:screenshots:rotate process (file cache store) records skipped, and the web process reads that status.
tests/js/storageCleanup.test.cjs:
Queued → running → completed, including the updated last; skipped.
A failed poll is reported and retried.
Switching to the fast interval after a request.
Out-of-order responses; responses sent before invalidate().
Nothing applied or scheduled after stop.
No polling while the page is hidden.
Fallback for a server that does not send thinning.status.
Locally: the full PHPUnit suite passes (546 tests, MariaDB), and node --test tests/js/storageCleanup.test.cjs passes (10 tests).
Not covered
No integration/smoke test that runs a real queue worker in a separate container. The cross-process test runs the worker side as a separate PHP process instead.
No Vue component-level test: the repo has no Vue test runner, so the logic lives in the util and is tested there.

Walkthrough
Screenshot cleanup now uses shared status tracking from request through worker completion. The cleaner resumes scans and stops at a configured deadline. The About page polls and displays cleanup status and outcomes.

Summary
Shared status model and timeout settings app/Helpers/StorageCleanupStatus.php, config/cleaner.php, .env.example
Shared cache state records cleanup status and timestamps, supports run locks and heartbeats, and marks queued or running states stale using configured timeouts.
The API queues a run-specific job. The command records cleanup outcomes and sends heartbeat and deadline information to the cleaner. The cleaner resumes scans and saves its position. Feature tests cover access, queueing, locks, timeouts, scan deadlines, and shared status across processes.
About-page polling and status display resources/frontend/core/utils/storageCleanup.js, resources/frontend/core/components/StorageManagementTab.vue, resources/frontend/core/i18n/locales/en.json, resources/frontend/core/i18n/locales/ru.json, tests/js/storageCleanup.test.cjs
The page polls storage data, displays cleanup state and outcomes, and handles polling and queue errors. English and Russian messages and utility tests cover the status helpers and polling behavior.

Explanation
The changes remain within #373. Shared status, run locks, job timeout handling, command outcomes, heartbeat and deadline handling, API fields, polling, UI messages, locale strings, and tests all support cleanup status visibility and recovery. Scan-position persistence and bounded cleanup support reliable long-running cleanup. No unrelated schema, quota, websocket, cleanup-history, or screenshot-selection change is shown.

Explanation
Active direct target: #373. The implementation meets the main coding objectives: shared default-cache status, queued and running states, skipped and failed outcomes, run-aware locking, polling and stale-response handling, updated storage data, authorization, compatibility fields, and frontend/backend tests. The PR does not include the requested automated integration smoke test with a real queue worker in a separate container. The reported separate PHP process test does not establish that deployment scenario.
Resolution
Add an automated integration or smoke test that queues cleanup through the web process and observes the status and final storage data while a real queue worker runs in a separate container.

The cleanup status lived in the per-process octane cache, so the status written
by the queue worker was never visible to the web container, and the About page
only fetched it on mount.
- Keep the status in the default (shared) cache store: idle, queued, running,
completed, skipped, failed. GET about/storage keeps space,
screenshots_available, thinning.now and thinning.last and adds
thinning.status, requested_at and finished_at.
- POST about/storage marks the cleanup queued atomically and does not queue
a second one while one is queued or running.
- Run the requested cleanup in a dedicated job with its own timeout and a
failed() hook instead of Artisan::queue(), whose command the worker killed
after 60 s.
- The command holds a run lock, records skipped/running/completed and marks
the run failed on exceptions; heartbeats and timeouts report a lost request
or a dead worker as failed.
- The storage tab polls while a cleanup is active (slower when idle, paused
while the page is hidden), ignores stale responses, stops on destroy and
reports the outcome confirmed by the backend. EN/RU messages.

With several queue workers, the job of a run lost with its worker becomes
available again after retry_after and is failed by the next worker
(tries = 1). Its failed() hook marked the status failed and force-released
the run lock even if a new run had been requested and started in the
meantime, so the new run was reported as failed and another one could
start next to it.
Every requested run now gets an id: it is stored with the status, passed to
the job and the command (--run), and owns the run lock. failed() only fails
the status of its own run and only releases a lock it owns.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01X7hzxnejq1B112X8yfXzgZ
- running_timeout is kept at least 60 s above job_timeout (default 960 s):
a run the worker has not killed yet is never reported as dead and taken
over by a new one.
- The storage tab discards the responses of refreshes sent before a cleanup
request, so an earlier "idle" cannot replace the queued state.

A request no worker picked up in time can be replaced by a new one. If the
job of the replaced request was picked up first, it took the free run lock
and marked itself running over the new request.
markRunning() now checks under the state lock that a requested run is still
the current one; a replaced run exits without touching the status and
releases the lock, and the job of the new request runs as usual.

With several queue workers, the job of a replaced request could hold the run
lock for the moment it takes to see it is not current. The job of the
current request, finding the lock taken, finished as if another run would
report the outcome, so the request stayed queued until it timed out and no
cleanup ran.
A requested run now waits for the run lock (cleaner.lock_wait, 60 s). If it
is still held and the request is still the current one, the job fails and
the request is reported as failed instead of being dropped.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01X7hzxnejq1B112X8yfXzgZ
A run without a heartbeat within running_timeout is not necessarily dead:
the weekly scheduled run has no queue timeout, and it scanned every
eligible interval before its first heartbeat. A request replacing it
force-released its run lock, so both cleaned up at once and the old run's
heartbeat and outcome overwrote the new request's status.
- queue() still replaces a stale run but leaves its lock alone; the new
request waits for the lock (cleaner.lock_wait) and is reported as failed
if it stays held.
- The heartbeat and the outcome of a run are written only while the status
belongs to that run; the time of the last cleanup is still updated.
- The pre-run count of all eligible screenshots is gone, and the heartbeat
also runs every 1000 intervals scanned while a page is looked up.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01X7hzxnejq1B112X8yfXzgZ
The run lock lived 3600 s while a scheduled cleanup had no time limit, so
a run longer than that lost its lock while still removing screenshots and
another run could start next to it; a job timeout above 3600 s had the
same effect.
- A run stops looking for new pages after cleaner.max_run_time
(job_timeout - lock_wait - 60, 780 s by default), both queued and
scheduled; the next run removes the rest. A requested run also ends
before the worker kills its job.
- The run lock lives max_run_time + 600 s, so it outlives every run.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01X7hzxnejq1B112X8yfXzgZ
…opped
Every page lookup, and every run, scanned the eligible intervals from the
lowest id. With runs bounded by max_run_time, a long range of old intervals
whose screenshots are already gone could stop every run before it reached
any screenshot left, so cleanup never freed space again.
The scan now continues after the last scanned interval, within a run and
across runs (the position is kept in the shared cache, also when a run
stops at its deadline), and wraps around once at the end.
