fix(attachments): let the VerifyAttachmentHash unique lock expire - #415
app/Jobs/VerifyAttachmentHash.php: public int $uniqueFor = 3600;, so a unique lock that is never released now expires after one hour. No other app code changes.
tests/Feature/Attachments/VerifyAttachmentHashUniqueLockTest.php: new tests.
Why 3600
One job runs for about a minute at most. Hashing a 512 MB file (upload_max_filesize, runtime/php/conf.d/99-cattr.ini) with sha512/256 takes about 1.1 s locally. On S3 the file is downloaded and hashed as a stream, and queue:work's default --timeout=60 cuts the run off (see the finding below).
The lock only blocks dispatches of the same attachment. Those come from the upload and from the daily cattr:attachments:verify run, so they are about 24 h apart. If the daily backlog stays in the queue for more than an hour, the worst outcome is a duplicate verification if someone also runs the command by hand. verifyHash() gives the same result if it runs twice.
A stale lock expires long before the next daily run, so that run verifies the attachment again. This matches the other unique jobs (GenerateScreenshotThumbnail, ClearExpiredApps: 3600).
Tests
New tests, in the same order as in the file:
While the lock is held, a dispatch is not queued.
A stale lock (the job is dispatched under Queue::fake(), so no worker releases it) still blocks at uniqueFor - 1 s and lets the job be queued again at uniqueFor.
The next daily cattr:attachments:verify run (one day later) queues the attachment again.
After normal (sync) processing the lock is released and the attachment is GOOD.
0 < uniqueFor < 86400.
Without the fix, tests 2, 3 and 5 fail. With the fix, all 5 pass.
Full suite: 391 tests / 2057 assertions OK before, 396 / 2071 OK after the lock fix. phpcs is clean on the changed files, and git diff --check is clean.
Hash verification timeout
Attachment hash verification on S3 downloads and hashes the whole object, since the S3 adapter only exposes the ETag as a checksum. On large files over slow links this took longer than the worker's default 60 s --timeout (init/pebble/001-cattr.yaml runs queue:work without options), so the worker killed the job and the attachment stayed PROCESSING forever.
VerifyAttachmentHash sets $timeout = 900: enough for a 512 MB attachment at about 5 Mbit/s and still below its 3600 s uniqueFor.
Laravel requires the connection's retry_after to be greater than the longest job timeout; otherwise a job that is still running is considered lost and handed to another worker, so it runs twice. retry_after was 90 and is now configurable through QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER (default 960) for the database, redis and beanstalkd connections; documented in .env.example.
Trade-off: if a worker crashes mid-job, that job is retried after retry_after (16 minutes by default) instead of 90 s.
tests/Unit/QueueRetryAfterTest.php checks that every job declaring $timeout stays below retry_after of all three connections, and that QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER is read with the 960 default. No other job declares a $timeout today (they run with the 60 s worker default).
Full suite after both commits: 400 tests / 2084 assertions OK.

Walkthrough
Attachment verification now has a finite unique-lock lifetime and a 900-second job timeout. Database, Redis, and Beanstalkd queue connections use a configurable retry delay that defaults to 960 seconds. New tests cover retry timing and unique-lock expiry and release.
Changes: Attachment verification queue timing

Summary
Job and queue timing app/Jobs/VerifyAttachmentHash.php, config/queue.php, .env.example, tests/Unit/QueueRetryAfterTest.php
VerifyAttachmentHash sets a 900-second timeout and a 3,600-second unique-lock lifetime. The database, Redis, and Beanstalkd connections read QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER, defaulting to 960 seconds. Unit tests check timeout constraints and configured values.
SQS deployments must configure visibility above 900 seconds to avoid duplicate attachment verification; the default database queue is configured safely.

Explanation
The title "fix(attachments): let the VerifyAttachmentHash unique lock expire" matches the main change. The PR sets VerifyAttachmentHash::$uniqueFor to 3600 seconds so a stale unique lock no longer blocks re-verification, and adds tests for lock expiry. The title omits the secondary changes (900-second job timeout, configurable QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER defaulting to 960, and the .env.example documentation), but the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#409] has two coding acceptance criteria. (1) A stale VerifyAttachmentHash lock expires and the attachment is verified again on the next daily run. (2) A test shows that a dispatch blocked by a stale lock can be queued again after uniqueFor. The head adds public int $uniqueFor = 3600; to app/Jobs/VerifyAttachmentHash.php. The PR description reports tests in tests/Feature/Attachments/VerifyAttachmentHashUniqueLockTest.php. Those tests cover blocking while the lock is held, re-queueing at uniqueFor, re-queueing on the next cattr:attachments:verify run, lock release after processing, and a bound on uniqueFor. The previous review also found these tests present and sufficient. The issue's documentation item asks that web, queue, and scheduler containers share a lock-capable cache store. The head .env.example now has commented guidance that states this requirement and names CACHE_DRIVER=redis as an example. The previous FAIL for this item is resolved. Documentation is non-coding, so this item is assessed as satisfied by the added guidance. Limit: the test file contents were not re-read in this assessment. The test results rely on the PR description and the previous review.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The head changes are: uniqueFor and timeout on VerifyAttachmentHash, the queue retry_after setting in config/queue.php, the QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER guidance in .env.example, and the tests. The timeout change is tied to [#409]. A job killed by the worker timeout does not release its unique lock, so the lock stays until uniqueFor expires. The 900 s timeout and the retry_after value of 960 s prevent a running job from being started twice. The config change is global. It changes retry_after from 90 to 960 s for the database, beanstalkd, and redis connections, so it affects retry timing for all jobs. The PR description and the config comments disclose this trade-off. Because it is necessary for the VerifyAttachmentHash timeout that prevents the stale lock, it is not an unrelated change. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

The lock is taken by the dispatcher and released by the worker. Without
uniqueFor it never expired, so a lock that was not released (worker crash,
cache store not shared with the worker) silently dropped every later
verification of the attachment. Expire it after an hour, well before the
next daily cattr:attachments:verify run.
Closes#409
…ter configurable
On S3 the hash check downloads and hashes the whole object; large files on
slow links exceeded the worker's default 60 s timeout, the job was killed
and the attachment stayed PROCESSING forever. VerifyAttachmentHash now sets
$timeout = 900. Laravel requires retry_after to exceed the longest job
timeout, otherwise a running job is handed to another worker, so
retry_after (was 90) reads QUEUE_RETRY_AFTER, default 960, for the
database, redis and beanstalkd connections. A test keeps every job timeout
below retry_after.
