Summary

This PR upgrades the frontend build runtime from Node.js 18 to Node.js 24 LTS and updates pnpm from v10 to v12.

The Node.js upgrade required a broader runtime image rework. The previous Alpine-based setup was not suitable for safely introducing the new Node.js runtime
without rebuilding Node.js manually and risking ABI compatibility issues. The builder and production images were therefore migrated from Alpine to Wolfi, which
provides a consistent package ecosystem and allows Node.js, PHP, Corepack, Composer, and their extensions to be pinned and built together.

Changes

Node.js and pnpm

  • Updated .nvmrc from Node.js 18.20 to 24.21.
  • Added a pinned Node.js 24 Wolfi package.
  • Updated Corepack to the Wolfi-based runtime.
  • Upgraded pnpm to v12.5.1.
  • Updated package.json and pnpm-lock.yaml.
  • Updated GitLab Pages CI from node:18-alpine to node:24-alpine.
  • Changed CI dependency installation to use pnpm install --frozen-lockfile.
  • Updated contributor documentation to reference Node.js 24 and pnpm 12.

Runtime image migration

  • Migrated the builder and runtime images from Alpine to Wolfi.
  • Reworked the apko and Melange package definitions.
  • Added pinned local packages for:
    • Node.js 24;
    • Corepack;
    • PHP 8.3;
    • Composer;
    • Pebble.
  • Updated the release workflow to build local packages in dependency order and publish a signed local APK repository.
  • Updated image metadata and cache invalidation to include all runtime package definitions.

PHP runtime

The Wolfi migration required the PHP runtime and its extensions to be rebuilt from a compatible package set. As a result, PHP was upgraded from 8.2 to 8.3 in both
the builder and production images.

This is a supporting compatibility change for the runtime migration, not an independent application-level PHP modernization.

Container runtime

  • Reworked the Dockerfile for the new builder/runtime image layout.
  • Moved runtime configuration from .root-fs and the old Alpine layout into dedicated runtime/ configuration.
  • Updated the container entrypoint and service supervision.
  • Added rootless runtime execution using UID/GID 10000.
  • Updated Nginx, PHP, cron, Pebble, and service configuration paths.
  • Updated exposed ports and runtime service separation.
  • Added Composer package build support to the release workflow.

Rationale

Keeping the old Alpine-based runtime while introducing Node.js 24 would require rebuilding or repackaging Node.js separately and could lead to ABI
incompatibilities between the builder, Node.js, native frontend dependencies, and the final runtime image.

Migrating the complete runtime to Wolfi provides one consistent package base for the builder and production images. This avoids maintaining a separately rebuilt
Node.js toolchain and keeps Node.js, Corepack, PHP, Composer, and native dependencies compatible within the same ecosystem.

Compatibility

  • Vue 2, Laravel Mix, and the existing frontend toolchain remain unchanged.
  • No migration from Laravel Mix to Vite is included.
  • No bulk frontend dependency modernization is included.
  • The Node.js version is declared through .nvmrc; pnpm is pinned through packageManager in package.json.

Validation

  • Verified that no active CI or documentation references to Node.js 18 or pnpm 10 remain.
  • Verified the patch with git diff --check.
  • The frontend installation, production build, lint checks, and container build should be validated by CI using Node.js 24, pnpm 12, and the new Wolfi-based
    builder image.

Closes #332

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added role-based startup for web, queue, scheduler, Reverb, and maintenance tasks.
    • Added optional configuration caching, migrations, seeding, and administrator setup.
    • Added scheduled Laravel tasks running every minute.
    • Added WebSocket support on port 8081, with web traffic on port 8080.
  • Upgrades

    • Updated runtime versions to PHP 8.3, Node.js 24, and pnpm 12.5.1.
    • Added rootless container operation with improved security.
    • Updated deployments to Pebble-managed services and /opt/cattr/app.
    • Improved Reverb connection handling across HTTP and HTTPS environments.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The project upgrades PHP and Node.js, adds Wolfi package builds, and replaces s6-overlay startup with a rootless Pebble runtime. Image paths, ports, CI, release publishing, Nginx, Compose, and Helm settings now use the new layout.

Changes

Runtime and build migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package and image build pipeline
.github/workflows/release.yml, build/packages/*, build/base/*, .nvmrc, .php-version, package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitlab-ci.yml
The build targets PHP 8.3, Node.js 24, pnpm 12, Wolfi repositories, and locally built Composer, Corepack, PHP, Node.js, and Pebble packages. Release hashes and package indexes include the updated inputs.
Rootless image layout
Dockerfile, build/base/*, docker-compose.yml, .helm/templates/deployment.yaml, .helm/values.yaml
Builder and runtime images use /opt/cattr/app, UID/GID 10000, updated ports, writable Laravel paths, and rootless deployment settings.
Entrypoint and service orchestration
init/container-entrypoint.sh, init/pebble/001-cattr.yaml, .root-fs/etc/s6-overlay/*, .root-fs/crontab, runtime/supercronic/crontab
The entrypoint performs optional bootstrap actions, parses service roles, and starts Pebble services. Previous s6-overlay services are removed, and scheduler execution moves to the runtime crontab.
Rootless Nginx routing
runtime/nginx/*, .root-fs/etc/nginx/*
The runtime adds rootless Nginx settings and routes HTTP, WebSocket, PHP, and Octane traffic from port 8080. The former Nginx configuration is removed.

Explanation

Issue [#332] requires Node.js 24, pnpm 12, and updated packageManager and engines metadata. The summary shows .nvmrc, CI, Docker/build tooling, documentation, and packageManager updates. It does not show an engines update. It also provides no reviewable evidence that dependency installation, the production build, lint/tests, or the Docker build succeed with Node.js 24 and pnpm 12.

Resolution

Add the required Node.js 24 engines metadata to package.json. Provide reviewable CI or equivalent results for frozen dependency installation, the production frontend build, JavaScript lint/test checks, and the Docker image build with Node.js 24 and pnpm 12.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes changes outside issue [#332]. It upgrades PHP, replaces Alpine and s6-overlay with Wolfi and Pebble, changes rootless runtime paths and ports, deletes existing service definitions, changes Docker Compose and Helm behavior, adds new runtime services, and changes database binding. These changes are not established as compatibility changes required for the Node.js 24 and pnpm 12 baseline.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated PHP, service-supervision, runtime-layout, deployment, and database-binding changes from this PR, or move them to separate PRs. Keep the Node.js 24, pnpm 12, frontend compatibility, CI, Docker build, and documentation changes required by [#332].

In that case, melange keygen cannot create the key, and later --keyring-append calls fail.
