Description

Follow-up to #2189 for #2184. #2189 limited the SIGUSR2 hot-reload to Waybar's main process, which stops the other processes in the bar's unit from being killed. But fast layout switching still breaks the bar on current dev. On dev @ e3e4506 (includes #2189), switching hyprdots/01 ↔ macos twice with hyde-shell waybar --set, 0.5 s apart, failed in 4 of 4 runs:

waybar[1472]: [info] Reloading...
waybar[1472]: [error] Error parsing JSON: * Line 1, Column 1
waybar[1472]: Syntax error: value, object or array expected.
hyde-Hyprland-bar.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
...
hyde-Hyprland-bar.service: Main process exited, code=killed, status=12/USR2
...
hyde-Hyprland-bar.service: Failed with result 'start-limit-hit'.

The causes that remain after #2189:

  1. Each switch reloads twice. --set, --next, --prev, --select-layout and a theme's layout preset refresh the files and reload Waybar in _apply_layout(). Then main() falls through to the default path, which rewrites includes.json, global.css and style.css and reloads again about 20 ms later. The journal shows two Sent signal SIGUSR2 per switch.
  2. Files are written in place. The second round of writes empties the files while Waybar is still reading them after the first reload, which is the Line 1, Column 1 above.
  3. SIGUSR2 can kill Waybar itself. A Waybar started a moment earlier gets the signal before it has installed its handler and dies (status=12/USR2). --kill-who=main can't help, because Waybar is the main process.
  4. A few failures in a row hit systemd's start limit, and the bar stays gone.

Changes (all in Configs/.local/lib/hyde/waybar.py):

  • restart_waybar(): with systemd, runs systemctl --user reset-failed and then systemctl --user restart on the unit, and falls back to run_waybar() if the restart fails (the transient unit may have been collected, see [Bug]: waybar start-limit-hit on clean deez install - defaults.css imports ~/.config/waybar/includes/, which is never deployed #2160). systemd serializes overlapping restarts, and reset-failed keeps fast switching from hitting the start limit. Without systemd, the SIGUSR2 reload is unchanged.
  • _atomic_write() / _atomic_copy(): write to a temp file in the same directory, then os.replace() it into place. They keep the old file's mode and write through a symlinked config (dotfiles managers). All live writes Waybar reads now go through them: config.jsonc, style.css, includes.json, global.css, border-radius.css and the initial user-style.css. The layout backup copy and staterc are unchanged.
  • One refresh and restart per switch: main() skips its default refresh and restart when _apply_layout() already did both. With --style, it still runs, so --set X --style Y behaves as before.

_signal_waybar() from #2189 is kept; --hide (SIGUSR1) still uses it.

Fixes #2184

Depends on / related:

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation update (non-breaking change; modified files are limited to the documentations)
  • Technical debt (a code change that does not fix a bug or add a feature but makes something clearer for devs)
  • Other (provide details below)

Checklist

Testing

Same scenarios on dev @ e3e4506 and on this branch. After each run I checked systemctl --user is-active, NRestarts, the waybar layer on each monitor in hyprctl layers, the journal and coredumpctl.

Scenario dev (with #2189) this PR
Fast switching, 2 rounds, 0.5 s apart 4 of 4 runs failed (exit 1 on empty JSON, status=12/USR2, one start-limit-hit with no bar) 7 of 7 runs clean (3 with the final commit)
Overlapping --set (two at once) — clean
--set, --next, --prev, no args, --update 2 SIGUSR2 per --set 1 restart each
Bar visible afterwards (hyprctl layers) gone after start-limit-hit on both monitors every time
Waybar memory — 57–73 MB

On the "hiding bug" the hot-reload was added for (#1755): I checked hyprctl layers after every switch, on two monitors, and never saw an active but invisible bar.

Clean install (HydeVM, dev @ e3e4506, one virtual monitor):

Scenario dev (with #2189) this PR
Single, fast ×3, overlapping --set no crash, but memory grows with every reload: 71.6 → 81.8 MB over 5 runs clean, memory flat at ~63 MB
20 back-to-back switches (no pause) Waybar aborted in its reload handler: Fatal glibc error: pthread_mutex_lock.c:426 ... assertion failed, status=6/ABRT, coredump, restarted by systemd 20 switches → exactly 20 starts, 0 restarts by systemd, bar on screen, ~63 MB
Caffeine on, then a layout switch — still on; its systemd-inhibit survives the restart (own scope)
Theme change (theme.switch.sh -n) — 1 restart, bar on screen
Wallpaper change (wallpaper.sh -n) — bar untouched

Machine: CachyOS, Hyprland 0.56.2, Waybar 0.15.0, amdgpu, two 1920x1080 monitors.

Additional context

The non-systemd path still hot-reloads with SIGUSR2, to keep this PR focused. It has the same race but no cgroup, and I can't test it here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Waybar now refreshes and restarts once after layout and theme changes, and restarts after wallpaper changes. On systemd systems, it resets the service’s failed state first and launches Waybar if the service is unavailable or restart fails; without systemd, the existing reload behavior remains.
    • Configuration, styles, generated files, and layout copies are written more safely to reduce the chance of incomplete files.
    • Normal layout discovery skips backup folders, while backup listings still include them.
    • Theme presets can apply and restore saved layout and style settings.

HyDE-Project#2189 limited the SIGUSR2 hot-reload to Waybar's main process, but fast
layout switching still breaks the bar on dev (HyDE-Project#2184):

- `--set`, `--next`, `--prev`, `--select-layout` and a theme's layout
preset refreshed the files and reloaded Waybar in _apply_layout(), then
main() fell through, rewrote includes.json, global.css and style.css
and reloaded again ~20 ms later.
- The files were written in place, so the second round of writes emptied
them while Waybar was still reading them after the first reload
("Error parsing JSON: Line 1, Column 1", exit 1).
- A Waybar started a moment earlier is killed by SIGUSR2 before it
installs its handler (status=12/USR2); --kill-who=main can't help since
  Waybar is the main process.
- A few failures in a row hit the start limit and leave no bar.

With systemd, restart_waybar() now runs `reset-failed` + `restart` on the
unit and falls back to run_waybar() if the unit is gone. Files Waybar
reads are written to a temp file and renamed into place, and main() skips
its refresh and restart when _apply_layout() has already done both. The
non-systemd path keeps the SIGUSR2 reload.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Waybar configuration, style, include, and generated CSS files now use atomic replacement. Systemd-managed Waybar resets unit failures before restarting. Layout application records completion so later steps can skip duplicate updates and restarts.

Changes

Waybar updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic file updates
Configs/.local/lib/hyde/waybar.py, CHANGELOG.md
Atomic write and copy helpers replace direct file writes and copies for Waybar configuration, styles, includes, and generated CSS. The helpers preserve existing permissions, apply umask-derived permissions to new files, and remove temporary files on failure.
Layout application lifecycle
Configs/.local/lib/hyde/waybar.py
Layout application ensures that user-style.css exists and records when it has completed. Update paths skip generated-file updates and restarts when layout application already performed them.
Waybar restart behavior
Configs/.local/lib/hyde/waybar.py
The systemd path resets the unit’s failed state and attempts a restart, then runs Waybar if restarting fails. The non-systemd path retains the existing reload-or-start behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to df571

Waybar updates now replace individual files atomically, and --update still completes its generated-file refresh before restarting. No new material merge risk is established; the remaining cross-process layout race predates this change.

_atomic_write() set a new file to 0644 regardless of the umask, so with a
restrictive umask a copied layout became world-readable. open(..., "w")
and shutil.copyfile(), which it replaces, create files as 0666 minus the
umask; do the same.

With a theme preset, --update applied the layout (refresh + restart) and
then regenerated the includes and CSS again, after the restart. The early
return that stops the second restart also skipped update_style(), which
creates the user-style.css that style.css imports.

Skip --update's second refresh once a preset was applied, and create
user-style.css in _apply_layout() too.
