fix(state): lock staterc and replace it atomically - #2195
Conversation
set_conf() rewrote staterc with sed -i or appended to it, without a lock,
while waybar.py and the Lua selectors rewrote it too. sed's c command also
ate backslashes in the value ("a\nb" became two lines), and a key present
twice was appended a third time.
Add staterc.sh, a writer that takes an flock on staterc.lock, rewrites
staterc into a temp file with the value passed literally through awk
(replace the first KEY= line, drop later duplicates, append if absent) and
renames it into place, keeping the file's mode. set_conf() now calls it;
Lua's staterc_set will use it too.
set_state_value() read staterc and rewrote it with open(..., "w"), without a lock. A writer that read it during that truncation saw an empty file and wrote back only its own key: two overlapping layout switches wiped staterc down to one line, dropping the workflow, animation, theme and shader settings. set_state_value() now holds an flock on staterc.lock, the same lock staterc.sh takes for set_conf() and Lua, and replaces staterc through a temp file and os.replace(), keeping its mode. ensure_state_file() no longer writes the file itself: it works out the missing values and sets them through set_state_value(), since holding the lock around get_current_layout_from_config(), which writes staterc too, would deadlock.
staterc_set() read staterc and rewrote it with io.open(path, "w"), without a lock, next to waybar.py and set_conf() doing the same. It now runs staterc.sh, which locks staterc, replaces it atomically and stores the value literally. The helper is found next to luautils/ from this file's own path (as luautils/init.lua finds its scripts), and gets xdg.state as XDG_STATE_HOME, so it writes the staterc this module reads. A failed write or a key that is not a shell variable name raises an error; shaders.lua already calls it under pcall.
Describe the staterc locking and atomic replace, and the set_conf() backslash and duplicate-key fixes.
exec {fd}>lock 2>/dev/null applied the redirect to the whole script, so
the lock-timeout warning and every later error were silently dropped.
Scope 2>/dev/null to the open with braces. STATERC_LOCK_WAIT overrides
the 10s wait, so tests can check the warning quickly.
_staterc_lock() raised when staterc.lock could not be opened (e.g. left root-owned by a sudo run), so every layout switch failed. Warn and write without the lock instead, as staterc.sh does; also for an flock error other than the lock being held.
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The new concurrent-write protection works, but Waybar can still store a layout name or style that does not match the selected layout path, or derive them incorrectly from a quoted path. Unescaped values in the shared state writer can still break or alter the sourced state file, as the old writers could. Fix the Waybar derivation before merging. Pre-merge checks |

Make accepted values safe to source.
The helper accepts a"b and writes KEY="a"b". Sourcing that assignment fails, although the write succeeds. Other accepted values, including $() expressions, can change meaning when scripts source staterc. Encode values as shell assignments and keep S.staterc_get() compatible with that encoding, or reject values that the current format cannot represent safely. The linked issue confirms that HyDE scripts source this file. (github.com)

Agreed that this is a real problem, but it predates this PR: the old set_conf() (sed ... c / >>), Lua's staterc_set() and Python's set_state_value() all wrote the value unescaped in the same format, so a"b or $(...) already broke source before. A proper fix escapes \, ", $ and backticks on write and unescapes them in Lua's staterc_get() and the Python readers, which changes the read side in three languages. To keep this PR focused on the locking and atomic replace, I'll send that as a separate follow-up.

@EnzoItaliano Thanks for clarifying. A separate follow-up is reasonable for this pre-existing issue. This PR can stay focused on locking and atomic replacement.
The encoding fix must cover both writers and readers so values remain literal across Bash, Lua, and Python. The finding remains open because the fix is deferred.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue?

ensure_state_file() worked out which WAYBAR_LAYOUT_* keys were missing before taking the lock, so a layout another writer set in the meantime was overwritten with the stale one. It also never filled a missing name or style when WAYBAR_LAYOUT_PATH was present. Add the missing keys through _add_missing_state_values(), which re-checks them under the lock and keeps any key set in the meantime, and describe the layout already in staterc when only the name or style is missing.

Recheck the layout path when adding derived values.
If ensure_state_file() reads layout A while its name or style is missing, another writer can set WAYBAR_LAYOUT_PATH to B before this lock is acquired. The present check protects existing keys, but these lines can still add a name or style derived from A beside path B. Read the current path under this lock and derive any missing name or style from that path before replacing the file.

Normalize the stored layout path before deriving missing entries.
When staterc.sh writes WAYBAR_LAYOUT_PATH="/layouts/foo.jsonc", get_state_value() returns the enclosing quotes. This branch passes that value to basename() and resolve_style_path(). It can add WAYBAR_LAYOUT_NAME=foo" and select the default style instead of the matching style. Remove the enclosing quotes and validate the path before deriving the missing entries.

~/.local/state/hyde/statercloses entries, and can end up with torn lines, when two HyDE commands write it at once (#2194). Its line format is unchanged.ensure_state_file()no longer writes the file itself. It works out the missing values and sets them throughset_state_value(), because holding the lock aroundget_current_layout_from_config(), which writes staterc too, would deadlock.state.lua:staterc_set()runsstaterc.sh.
