What changed

  • create_staging refuses a name containing a path separator (InvalidInput) so the staging file can't be created outside dir — d3211499.
  • Staging tests and the PPTX LibreOffice test create a fresh, unpredictable 0700 directory instead of reusing a PID-named one after ignored cleanup — 84a0a0ca, 51e305e9, f2771e03, 3545c288.
  • packaging/macos/import-cert.sh writes the certificate and keychain into a fresh mktemp -d owner-only directory — 0c23ab16.

Checks run

  • cargo fmt --check -p pdfcraft-platform -p pdfcraft-export
  • cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-platform -p pdfcraft-export --all-targets -D warnings
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-platform -p pdfcraft-export staging pptx_opens
  • bash -n packaging/macos/import-cert.sh

Checks not run

  • workspace-wide cargo test
  • shellcheck (not installed)
  • macOS signing script not run (no macOS runner)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Staging requests with empty names or names containing path components are now rejected with an input error, preventing files from being created for those requests.
  • Improvements
    • Temporary directories used during document conversion and signing are now uniquely created and restricted to the current owner on Unix-like systems.
    • Test setup now uses fresh temporary directories, reducing conflicts between repeated or concurrent runs.

Walkthrough

The changes validate staging names, use fresh temporary directories in tests, and create a new temporary directory for macOS certificate import.

Changes: Temporary Path Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Staging name validation
crates/platform/src/staging.rs, crates/platform/src/staging/tests.rs
create_staging_as rejects empty names and names containing path separators. Tests cover invalid names and verify that no files are created.
Test temporary directories
crates/platform/src/staging/tests.rs, crates/export/src/pptx/tests.rs
The tests create fresh, process-specific directories. On Unix, they request owner-only permissions.
macOS signing temporary directory
packaging/macos/import-cert.sh
The script creates a new temporary directory under the selected temporary-directory path.

The changes are mergeable with cleanup follow-up: repeated signing runs can leave directories containing signing keychains on persistent runners. Cleanup should occur after signing and notarization finish.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the two main themes of the changeset: confining staging names in create_staging and using private temp directories in tests and the macOS signing script. It is long at 83 characters, and it lists three areas in one line, but it is specific and relevant to the changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: it covers what changed, lists the checks run and not run, and includes commit references. It does not fill in the template's Never-crash, Provenance, Security, Parity and reach, or reviewer-focus sections, and it does not state a Fixes # reference or whether the new test was confirmed to fail before the fix. Those gaps are minor for a security-hardening change with no new assets or network access, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 75.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Remove the signing temp directory after codesign no longer needs the keychain.

Each run creates a new pdfcraft-signing.* directory. The EXIT trap removes only the certificate, so the directory and keychain remain on every completion path. If the temp parent persists between runs, directories accumulate, and each keeps a keychain holding the signing identity. Remove the keychain and $TMP in a later step, after signing and notarization.

Not changed: the signing keychain in $TMP is used after this script exits (package.sh signs with --keychain "$MACOS_KEYCHAIN", and notarization follows), so the script can't delete it itself. No workflow in this repository runs import-cert.sh, so the cleanup step belongs to the release pipeline that does.

Question for the owner: should the release workflow add a final if: always() step that runs security delete-keychain "$MACOS_KEYCHAIN" and removes its folder, or should package.sh delete the keychain itself after notarization?

@dylanmtaylor The release pipeline should own cleanup because it controls the keychain’s full lifetime. Keep the keychain available after import-cert.sh exits. Do not make package.sh delete a keychain supplied by its caller.

I recommend a final if: always() cleanup step in the calling release workflow, after signing and notarization. It should:

  • Run security delete-keychain "$MACOS_KEYCHAIN".
  • Remove only the private directory created for this import.
  • Handle failures before MACOS_KEYCHAIN reaches $GITHUB_ENV.

Under this repository’s workflow rules, put that step in the shared release workflow, not a new local job.

Your explanation clarifies where cleanup belongs; it does not invalidate the later-cleanup concern. The calling pipeline’s cleanup remains unverified.

Would you like a follow-up issue to track cleanup in the release pipeline?

Tested on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (10.0.19045), head 82fbdda. cargo test -p pdfcraft-platform --lib staging: 10 passed.

One gap on Windows: a colon. There, std::path::is_separator is only / and \. But a : in a file name is NTFS's stream separator, so it also puts the staging file somewhere else: .NUL:.<suffix>.pdfcraft-tmp is a stream of a file named .NUL. The rename then fails, and the cleanup removes only the stream, so an empty file stays behind.

I ran a throwaway test on this branch that calls write_atomically on <dir>\<name>:

Target name Result Left in the folder
NUL: os error 183 .NUL, 0 bytes
c:d.pdf os error 87 ("The parameter is incorrect") .c
report.pdf:hidden os error 87 .report.pdf

Nothing is lost: each save reports an error. But each one leaves a stray file, and the error doesn't say what's wrong.

Automation reaches this. pdfcraft-cli run --root DIR with doc_save to NUL: fails with "The parameter is incorrect. (os error 87)" and leaves .NUL in DIR. The desktop app replaces : in typed names first, so only raw paths (automation, mostly) get here.

Refusing : on Windows too closes it:

if name.is_empty() || name.chars().any(|c| std::path::is_separator(c) || (cfg!(windows) && c == ':')) {

With that change, all three give "the file name is not a single name" and leave the folder empty. The existing staging tests still pass (10). A drive letter can't trip it, since name is the target's file name, never the whole path.

This came up while reviewing #5945, whose device-name check doesn't match NUL: either. I've noted the device side there.
