fix(xfa): honour named pageArea targets on subform page breaks and overflow (#3910) - #4598
Resolve named and #id (or SOM-qualified) pageArea targets during XFA layout so subforms switching between portrait and landscape masters open pages from the targeted pageArea (including replacing an empty initial page when the first subform targets a different master, keeping the active master across overflow pages while its occur_max allows, and routing non-splittable child subforms that carry break directives through flow_subform).
Refresh a width-less container's available width when a page break switches to a content area of a different width so landscape sections receive their full landscape contentArea width rather than being clamped to an earlier portrait master's width.
Page breaks and overflow can target page areas by name or ID, letting documents select specific page layouts. Explicit break targets carry forward to later pages, while overflow targets apply during the relevant subform’s layout.
Bug Fixes
Page dimensions and content widths now update correctly when content flows across page areas or resumes after a break.
Replaced empty pages no longer contribute fields or field names to the document.
Parent widths and margins are better preserved when layout restarts, and flowed siblings use the current content-area width after content splits.

Walkthrough
The change adds named page-area targets for XFA subform breaks and overflow. The layouter selects target areas, replaces empty pages while restoring page-local state, and recalculates flowed-frame widths when content-area dimensions change.
Subform stores break-before, break-after, and overflow targets. PageArea stores an optional ID. The parser reads these values from XFA elements and attributes.

The layouter resolves target names and IDs, selects areas for breaks, and replaces empty pages. Page replacement restores field counts and name reservations. Flow handling includes subforms with page breaks or targets. Tests cover target selection, overflow behavior, and page-local state.
Flowed frames retain width constraints and refresh their widths when page or content-area bounds change. Tests cover named masters, content areas, margins, and siblings after a split.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 7237c
Confirm that fixed-width content moves with its new content area and that overflow targets do not affect later breaks before merging. The roadmap inconsistency also remains open.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7237c
A crafted document can repeatedly redraw discarded page masters without accumulating pages or objects toward their existing limits. Other resource limits remain, but this introduces processing-cost amplification. Target selection remains confined to the document.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Empty subforms can alternate named page targets, repeatedly discarding and redrawing master content. Page removal and item refunds prevent that work from accumulating toward the page and object ceilings. Unlike the base, master rendering can consequently generate substantially more objects during one layout. The remaining measurement budget limits progress but does not charge each generated text span, leaving a document-controlled processing-cost amplification path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The availability exposure is the process performing layout of a supplied dynamic XFA document. The inspected rendering path does not require document-script execution to reach layout. Shared-worker, tenant or deployment-wide propagation is not established by the available evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A template can supply expensive master text and alternating empty break-before targets. Each switch removes the previous page and refunds its objects, then renders another master. Text rendering can produce many spans per measured node, so retained-output limits no longer provide the same cumulative generation bound as at the base. This is a source-supported amplification concern; practical exhaustion thresholds were not measured.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Targets remain document-local. Existing controls retain limits of 500 retained pages, 400,000 retained objects, 2,000,000 measurements, depth 64 and 50 instances per repeating subform. Image-byte accounting remains monotonic even when pages are discarded. These controls constrain the concern but do not restore cumulative generated-object accounting.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Each top-level layout constructs fresh owned state and returns a Form only after successful completion. Layout failures propagate before render_into writes the form, containing partially restored page state within the failed invocation rather than reusing it on the next layout.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Separate retained-output accounting from a monotonic generation-work budget. Charge discarded master rendering to that budget, and validate that repeated empty target switches terminate under it without corrupting retained field counts or names.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #3910 has two symptoms: (a) visible elements are missing, and (b) landscape pages are clipped or shown in the wrong orientation. The reviewed head implements the page-area mechanism that Acrobat uses. The model and parser keep pageArea id and the breakBefore, breakAfter, break, and overflow targets. Layout resolves named, #id, and SOM-qualified targets (pages.rs find_page_area, select_break_area), and it replaces an empty initial page (switch_empty_page). It also keeps the active master across allowed overflow pages and routes child subforms with break directives through flows_as_subform. Width-less containers refresh their available width after a content-area change (pages.rs, flow.rs). The regression tests in crates/xfa/src/tests.rs check these cases. named_page_area_breaks_switch_between_portrait_and_landscape_masters asserts landscape pages for Page3 and #PA3, and asserts that 240mm fields keep more than 670pt width. It also checks that a positioned field at x=200mm is not clipped. overflow_target_does_not_steer_a_later_untargeted_break and replacing_empty_page_restores_master_field_state cover overflow and field-state handling. The issue gives no source PDF, no screenshots, and no confirmed root cause. The missing-elements symptom is therefore verified only indirectly, through field-count and page-state tests, and not through the reported document. The orientation and clipping requirement is supported by the direct tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes address page-area selection, break and overflow targets, empty-page replacement, width refresh on content-area changes, and field-name state on discarded masters. Each change is tied to the page-master handling that #3910 reports. The layout.rs documentation and Frame width-limit helpers support the width refresh. The draw.rs page_names tracking supports the field-state behavior that the tests check. The tests cover these same behaviors. The available evidence shows no unrelated product behavior or unrelated file changes.

Approving. XFA layout now honours named pageArea targets on subform page breaks: the parser reads breakBefore/breakAfter/overflow targets (and the break element attributes) plus the pageArea id, find_page_area matches by name or #id or the last SOM segment and prefers an area whose occurrence limit is not exhausted, the chosen area is remembered as the preferred one for the next new page, and a break on an empty page switches that page rather than leaving it blank. Subforms carrying a break or target now flow through flow_subform, and the available width is recomputed when a break lands on a content area of a different width. The occurrence-limit fallbacks keep the old behaviour when nothing matches. I read all the non-test source; the page-switching and width logic is intricate, and I traced it against the cases in the diff rather than running it. The gate and SonarCloud both pass at bd39678. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.

crates/xfa/src/parse.rs:646-659 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Resolve contentArea break targets before selecting a page area.
parse_subform accepts targetType="contentArea" and sets break_before_page or break_after_page. flow_subform then passes the target to find_page_area, which checks only PageArea.name and PageArea.id. A named or #idcontentArea therefore resolves to None.
The break still runs, but break_frames_to receives no target and new_page() selects its default page area. This can place the subform on the wrong content area or page master. Resolve content-area targets to their containing page area and content-area index, then route the break to that destination. Preserve the existing PageArea resolution path.

1c92656 fixes the earlier CodeRabbit minors. switch_empty_page restores page_fields and page_names when it replaces the empty page. new_page_of and next_area now set Frame.width_limits and call refresh_frame_widths, so open frames take the new page area's widths.
I ran fmt, clippy and the tests for -p pdfcraft-xfa locally on a fresh worktree merged with current main. All green (129 passed). The gate and SonarCloud also pass.
Non-blocking, for a follow-up if you agree:
crates/xfa/src/layout.rs:679-680: find_page_area prefers a matching area that still has occur_max left, but then falls back to an exhausted one. Its callers (break_frames_to at l.846, and switch_empty_page / new_page_of at l.711/731) don't check occur_max again. So a breakBefore/breakAfter targeting a pageArea whose max is used up still lays out one more page of it. new_page (l.684-689) avoids this. It's an edge case, and not a regression for forms that respect their own max.
CodeRabbit's contentArea target Major is not introduced here: main already treats a contentArea break as a plain page break, and this PR is about pageArea targets. A separate issue would make sense.
Restore preferred_area after processing overflow_target.
When a later sibling has an untargeted page break, break_frames_to(..., None) calls new_page(). new_page() reuses the previous subform’s preferred_area, so the sibling can select the earlier overflow master instead of the normal first eligible area.
Save the value before applying overflow_target, then restore it before break_after_page. This preserves explicit breakBefore and breakAfter targets.

An overflow target was left in preferred_area after its subform finished, so a
later sibling's untargeted break called new_page() and reused that master even
when nothing had overflowed. The target now applies only while its subform is
open. Explicit break targets still stick, including a descendant break that
names the same master.

When a width-less table with an overflow_target moves to a named page area, refresh_frame_widths updates the active frame, but flow_table keeps the original x, inner_w, and cols. Subsequent rows can therefore use the previous area's position and column widths.
