Summary

An in-flight Cluster.on_up() can complete after its Host is removed and a different object with the same host_id is registered. Stale success can mark the retired host UP and run callbacks; stale failure cleanup can affect the replacement pool.

Serialize UP completion with Cluster.remove_host() using the host callback lock. Check that the exact Host object is still registered before completion or cleanup, including the no-future and synchronous-error paths. If a callback removes the host, stop the remaining callbacks and pool reconciliation. This changes no public API or wire protocol; broader positive policy callback ordering remains tracked in #1075.

Fixes #1074

Pre-review checklist

  • I have split my patch into logically separate commits. (One cohesive fix.)
  • All commit messages clearly explain what they change and why.
  • I added relevant tests for the bug fix.
  • All commits compile, pass static checks and pass test. (The unit suite passed; no separate static checks were run.)
  • PR description sums up the changes and reasons why they should be introduced.
  • No new public items require docstrings.
  • No documentation change is needed.
  • I added an appropriate Fixes: annotation to the PR description.

Decisions

  • Choice: Replacement acquires the old host's callback lock before unpublishing it, and the comment should describe that ordering. Source: cluster: discard in-flight UP completion for retired hosts #1124 (comment)
  • Choice: During remove_host, hold the host callback lock through identity check, metadata unpublishing, and the removed-state transition; release it before removal notifications and reconciliation.

UP completion and failure cleanup check that a host remains the current metadata object before callbacks, pool updates, or reconnection. Host removal and replacement coordinate through the host’s DOWN-callback lock. Topology refresh also locks and checks host identity before removing a host. Tests cover stale completions and races among UP handling, removal, replacement, and refresh.

An in-flight pool future can finish after its Host is removed and a
same-ID replacement is registered. Serialize completion with removal
and check object identity before marking the old host UP or cleaning
up failed pool creation. Stop callbacks and pool reconciliation if a
listener removes the host reentrantly.

Cover stale success, failure, and exception results, synchronous
paths, and removal while completion is in progress.

Fixes: #1074
A replacement could publish after an UP completion validated the old host
but before it marked that host UP. Acquire the old host callback lock before
publishing, and retry when the endpoint owner changes while acquiring it.

Cover replacement racing an in-flight UP callback.

Refs: #1074
Peers refresh removes unseen hosts directly from metadata. Hold the host
callback lock and verify its identity before unpublishing it, so a running
UP completion cannot mark a retired host UP after the refresh.

Endpoint-move replacement still unpublishes the old Host without its callback lock.

The comment says that removal and replacement hold host._down_callbacks_lock while they unpublish the host. That is true for remove_host() and Metadata._add_or_replace_host(). It is false for Cluster.replace_hosts_endpoints() (lines 3036-3039). That method calls self.metadata.replace_host_endpoints(replacements) without any old host's callback lock. Only the on_remove() call that follows takes the lock.

Failure sequence:

  1. An UP completion passes _is_current_host(host) at line 2378 or line 2384.
  2. A topology refresh moves the same host_id to a new endpoint.
  3. The completion still runs listener.on_up(old_host) or session.update_created_pools().
  4. That update_created_pools() call reads metadata.all_hosts(), which already contains the replacement. The replacement is not pending yet because on_add(replacement) waits behind on_remove(old). The call can therefore claim an intent and start pool creation for the replacement.

This breaks the #1074 acceptance criterion that a stale success must not reconcile replacement pools.

Fix: in replace_hosts_endpoints(), acquire every source host's _down_callbacks_lock before metadata.replace_host_endpoints(). Use a deterministic order, such as sorting by host_id, so that batches cannot deadlock. Re-check get_host_by_host_id(h.host_id) is h under those locks.

Update Cluster.replace_hosts_endpoints to acquire each source host’s
_down_callbacks_lock in deterministic host_id order before calling
Metadata.replace_host_endpoints. While holding those locks, re-check that
get_host_by_host_id(host.host_id) is the same source Host, so stale endpoint
moves cannot unpublish a newer host.

Keep metadata unpublishing and the removed-state transition under the host
callback lock. Run listeners and pool reconciliation after releasing it so
network refreshes and user callbacks cannot stall other host transitions.
Keep on_remove's existing signature by moving notification dispatch to a
private helper.

Cover the lock boundary with a concurrent removal callback test.
Acquire source host callback locks before publishing endpoint replacements so
in-flight UP completion cannot act on a retired host after its identity check.
Take batch locks in stable order and release them before lifecycle callbacks.

Cover the move/completion race with a deterministic test.
