As to the issue with version strings being treated as numbers, I opted for !!str in YAML rather than | json in Jinja because it makes the intention explicit: the version must be treated as a string, even when it looks like a number (e.g. 3006.30).

The json filter only serialises the existing value; it doesn't guarantee string output. If the value is already numeric, it will remain numeric and YAML may interpret it as such.

Using !!str at the point where the value is defined both preserves the version string (including trailing zeros) and better communicates the requirement to anyone maintaining the configuration.
