Summary

  • Release v0.1.7 with Node.js 26 LTS, pnpm 12.17.0, Hono 4.13.14, and compatible dependency updates.
  • Add GET /profile/:username, which renders a GitHub icon and supports all 56 card themes with a persistent, atomic Redis counter.
  • Select complete Redis credential pairs and bound new counter storage to 100,000 usernames across instances.
  • Preserve the existing card endpoint, escape SVG attributes, and avoid exposing internal errors in unexpected card failures.
  • Run formatting, type checking, lint, tests, and build in CI; update the deployment and configuration documentation.
  • Override the vulnerable development dependency minimatch to its patched release.

Usage

![Profile views](https://github-profile-card-blue.vercel.app/profile/nayandas69)
![Themed profile views](https://github-profile-card-blue.vercel.app/profile/nayandas69?theme=dracula)

Replace nayandas69 with the desired GitHub username. A successful GET reaching the service increments the counter. HEAD and OPTIONS requests do not.

Deployment and limitations

  • Configure Upstash Redis credentials for persistent badge counts; the endpoint returns a non-cacheable 503 badge when storage is unavailable. Card caching can still operate without Redis.
  • Existing v1 counters are preserved. Stop earlier badge instances before deploying this version to avoid splitting counts. The v2 counter cap returns 503 for new usernames when full; existing counters continue to increment. Existing v1 keys are outside the v2 cap.
  • GitHub's image proxy may cache the badge, so an embedded image cannot guarantee a count for every profile page refresh. Requests can also include bots or repeated visits.
  • Node.js 26 is required. The repository previously supported Node 24 and later.
  • GitHub GraphQL, a live Upstash database, and a hosted Vercel deployment were not exercised because credentials and deployment access were unavailable.

Verification

  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm lint
  • pnpm test — 69 tests passed
  • pnpm build
  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile and pnpm audit — passed for the unchanged dependency configuration
  • Visually inspected a themed badge in cloud Chromium and checked the unconfigured storage response locally.
  • Tested Redis scripts locally against Redis 8.0.5, including concurrent admission at capacity, atomic increments, legacy counters, and persistence without expiration. The committed integration test seeds 99,999 counters and checks admission, rejection, and existing increments at the full 100,000 limit. The test requires redis-server and redis-cli; CI installs them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary

  • New Features
    • Added profile-view badges with theme options and persistent view counts. Badge requests return an unavailable indicator if storage is unavailable; profile requests may return a 503.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved SVG escaping for card content and replaced detailed card-route error messages with a generic response.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and usage guidance for profile-view badges, including storage requirements and limits.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Redis-backed profile-view endpoint with themed SVG output and bounded counters. It also updates card SVG escaping and error responses, and changes the supported runtime, dependencies, and CI checks.

Changes: Profile-view badges

Layer / File(s) Summary
Redis credentials and counter storage
src/services/redis-credentials.ts, src/services/github.ts, src/services/views.ts, __tests__/views-storage.test.ts, __tests__/views-storage.integration.test.ts
Redis credentials come from a complete Upstash pair or, if unavailable, a complete KV pair. Counter logic handles existing keys and admits new entries into a shared hash subject to capacity and rate limits. Tests exercise Redis commands, failures, and admission boundaries.
Profile endpoint and badge rendering
src/app.ts, src/services/views.ts, __tests__/profile-views.test.ts, .env.example, README.md, vercel.json
The endpoint handles GET and HEAD requests, validates usernames, and returns themed SVGs. Storage failures return 503 with a retry header; admission-limit failures return 429. Documentation describes configuration, counter behavior, and deployment routing.

Card response hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
SVG escaping and generic errors
src/services/card.ts, src/app.ts, __tests__/card-renderer.test.ts, __tests__/card-route.test.ts
The card renderer XML-escapes avatar and language color values. Unhandled route failures return a generic 500 response. Tests cover SVG escaping and route error responses.

Runtime and CI updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime, dependencies, and CI checks
.node-version, package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, README.md, ARCHITECTURE.md
The project specifies Node.js 26.13.0 and pnpm 12.17.0. CI runs formatting, type checking, lint, tests, and build in one job. Dependency versions and the minimatch override are updated, and ARCHITECTURE.md is removed.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b85d0

Confirm Vercel routing and protect new badge admissions before merging: deployed routes may return 404, and abusive requests can block new badges.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b85d0

The counter updates are bounded and atomic, but one unauthenticated caller can consume the shared ten-new-profile hourly allowance and temporarily block every other new profile. Existing counters remain usable. Deployment-specific abuse controls and safe upgrade procedures have not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: With Redis configured and requests reaching the application, an unauthenticated caller can admit ten arbitrary valid usernames into an unused admission window, exhausting the allowance shared by all instances. Other new profiles then receive 429 until the window resets; repeating this each window can sustain denial of new-profile admission. Existing counters bypass this allowance and remain usable. The atomic storage cap limits growth but does not provide admission fairness. Separate edge controls are documented, not established as deployed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated admission-denial scope is every new v2 username sharing the selected Redis hash across application instances. It does not require account ownership or a GitHub token. Existing v1 and v2 counters remain incrementable; direct compromise of other Redis data is not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller submits GET requests for ten distinct, previously uncounted valid usernames during an unused window. Each request consumes the same server-authorized admission budget; a subsequent legitimate new username receives 429. Repeating after each reset can sustain denial. Atomic admission and the storage cap prevent race-based over-admission, but do not prevent this budget-consumption path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Public request input crosses into server-authorized Redis writes only after syntax validation. Clients cannot supply the Redis destination or credentials through this route. The inspected middleware provides CORS and logging, not caller-scoped admission protection; documentation places provider-quota protection in separately configured edge limits.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Storage failures return a non-cacheable unavailable badge without provider error details or a misleading in-memory total. Inspected tests assert concurrent admission limits, continued existing-counter increments, capacity enforcement and non-mutating HEAD/OPTIONS behavior; they do not establish deployed edge protection or mixed-version safety.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate new-counter admission from unrestricted image retrieval, or add an abuse-aware admission mechanism that prevents one caller from consuming the entire shared allowance. Preserve anonymous increments for existing badges and verify any edge controls as part of deployment.

Retain a sanitized failure category for profile view storage errors.

The profile handler currently logs the same message for Redis failures and v2 counter-cap exhaustion. Add a typed or fixed-category error in incrementProfileViews, bind the caught error, and log only a category such as redis_failure, counter_cap_exhausted, or storage_not_configured. Keep the generic 503 response. Do not log raw provider error text.

1-10: Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

The catch-all rewrite can send /profile/:username and /card/:username to /api, where the Hono app has no matching route.

The rewrite replaces the request path with /api. The Hono app registers its routes at the root and has no /api route, so a request to /profile/alice can reach the handler as /api and return a 404. The same rewrite applies to /card/:username, so the existing card endpoint can also fail.

The documented rewrite behavior for functions replaces the path with the destination. The documented path-preservation behavior applies to Vercel services, which this repository does not configure. Confirm the behavior on a preview deployment before merging. If the function does not receive the original path, change the rewrite so the original path reaches the Hono app, or remove the catch-all if the existing routes already work without it.
