🎨 Customization

Adding New Map Providers

Extend the tile provider system by adding to TileProviders in tile-providers.js:

// Add custom provider configuration
CUSTOM_PROVIDER: {
    name: 'Custom Map Service',
    urlTemplate: 'https://api.example.com/tiles/{z}/{x}/{y}.png',
    attribution: '© Custom Provider 2024',
    maxZoom: 18,
    // Optional: Additional configuration
    tileSize: 256,
    format: 'png'
}

Customizing Airport Visualization

Modify airport point appearance in flights.js:

// In createAirportPoint function
const material = new BABYLON.StandardMaterial("airportMat", scene);
material.emissiveColor = new BABYLON.Color3(1, 1, 0); // Yellow glow
material.diffuseColor = new BABYLON.Color3(0.8, 0.8, 0);

// Customize sphere geometry
const sphere = BABYLON.MeshBuilder.CreateSphere("airport", {
    diameter: 0.008,     // Size adjustment
    segments: 16         // Smoothness (8-32 recommended)
}, scene);

Flight Arc Customization

Enhance flight arc appearance and behavior:

// In createFlightArc function
const arcMaterial = new BABYLON.StandardMaterial("flightArc", scene);
arcMaterial.emissiveColor = new BABYLON.Color3(0, 0.8, 1); // Cyan glow
arcMaterial.alpha = 0.7; // Transparency
arcMaterial.wireframe = false; // Solid or wireframe

// Adjust arc geometry
const arcHeight = 0.15; // Arc peak height above surface
const segments = 64;     // Smoothness (32-128 recommended)

Camera Behavior Tuning

Fine-tune camera controls in scene.js:

// Zoom limits and sensitivity
camera.lowerRadiusLimit = 1.05;     // Minimum zoom (surface distance)
camera.upperRadiusLimit = 3.0;      // Maximum zoom out
camera.wheelDeltaPercentage = 0.01;  // Zoom sensitivity (0.005-0.02)

// Rotation sensitivity
camera.angularSensibilityX = 1000;   // Horizontal rotation (500-2000)
camera.angularSensibilityY = 1000;   // Vertical rotation (500-2000)

// Inertia and damping
camera.inertia = 0.9;                // Movement smoothing (0.8-0.95)

🚦 Troubleshooting

Quick Diagnostics

Use Built-in Debug Commands:

// Check overall system health
getSystemStatus()     // Comprehensive system report
quickStatus()         // Quick health summary
testDataFiles()       // Validate data integrity

Common Issues & Solutions

🌍 Globe not loading or appearing black?

  • Verify you're serving files over HTTP/HTTPS (not file://)
  • Check browser console for WebGL or network errors
  • Test WebGL support: checkWebGLSupport() in console
  • Try different map provider: useOpenStreetMap() or useESRIWorldImagery()

📡 Tiles not loading or showing errors?

// Diagnose tile loading issues
getCurrentTileProvider() // Check current provider status
  • Some providers may have rate limits or require API keys
  • Network connectivity issues - check browser network tab
  • Try switching providers: useCartoDBDark() often works reliably

✈️ Flight data not appearing?

// Debug flight system
reinitializeFlights()          // Reset flight system
getFlightStatistics() // Check data loading status
  • Ensure JSON files are accessible and valid
  • Check browser console for data loading errors
  • Verify file paths match the data directory structure

🎯 Performance issues or lag?

  • Try faster map provider: useESRIWorldImagery() (typically fastest)
  • Reduce airport point size: setAirportPointSize(0.5)
  • Check system status: getSystemStatus() for performance metrics
  • Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in browser settings

🖱️ Camera controls not working properly?

// Reset camera position
setCameraPosition(-2, 2, -0.5)  // Default position
enableCameraLogging()            // Debug camera movements

🔧 Development and debugging issues?

// Enable detailed logging
enableDebugMode()                // Additional console output
logCameraPosition()              // Current camera state

Browser-Specific Issues

Safari: May need to enable WebGL 2.0 in Develop menu Firefox: Check webgl.force-enabled in about:config Chrome: Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in Settings > Advanced

Error Recovery

The application includes automatic error recovery:

  • Network Issues: Automatic retry for failed tile/data loads
  • WebGL Errors: Graceful fallback with user notification
  • Data Loading: Smart caching prevents repeated failed requests
  • User Overlays: Clear error messages with suggested actions

If you encounter persistent issues, use getSystemStatus() to generate a comprehensive diagnostic report.
