Document OpenVox repository URLs and public mirrors #479

Description

@miharp

The OpenVox repositories are hosted on a single server in Germany (Hetzner, via OSU OSL's S3). Users outside Europe regularly see slow downloads (a Slack thread today reported ~180 KB/s from the US), and the usual answer is "use a mirror" — but the list of public mirrors only exists as comments on OpenVoxProject/planning#41. That issue planned a mirrors page on voxpupuli.org, which never happened, and the voxpupuli.org OpenVox pages are now being phased out (#442). This site is the right home.

Proposed page

A Repositories and mirrors page in the openvox collection, next to the Linux install page, present in both 8.x and 9.x like the other install docs, covering:

  • Canonical URLs and layout: apt.voxpupuli.org, yum.voxpupuli.org, downloads.voxpupuli.org, artifacts.voxpupuli.org, and rsync.voxpupuli.org which serves all of them under apt/, yum/, downloads/, artifacts/. Note that apt.overlookinfratech.com and s3.osuosl.org/openvox-* are the same server under other names, not mirrors.
  • Public mirror table (from planning#41, all verified reachable on 2026-09-10 unless noted), with region, protocols, sync interval:
    • mirror.rackspace.com/openvox/ — geo-DNS across 6 regions (3× US, UK, HK, AU), daily
    • mirror.grid.uchicago.edu/pub/openvox/ — US, http/https/rsync, every 6h
    • ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/openvox/ — Germany, http/https/rsync/ftp, every 12h
    • www.mirrorservice.org/sites/{apt,yum,downloads,artifacts}.voxpupuli.org/ — UK (JANET), rsync via rsync.mirrorservice.org, 4× daily
    • openvox.mirror.liquidtelecom.com/ — Kenya, rsync modules openvox, openvox-apt, openvox-yum, every 6h
    • linorg.usp.br/voxpopuli/ — Brazil, http/https/rsync, daily
    • openvox.repo.nfrance.com/ — France; reachable but layout not verified
    • mirror.its.dal.ca/openvox/ — Canada; unreachable on 2026-09-10, confirm before listing
  • Using a mirror: the openvox*-release packages always point at voxpupuli.org, so using a mirror means writing your own .repo / sources.list file. Show a sample for each, plus the yumrepo / apt::source equivalents (overlaps with the "Managing OpenVox with OpenVox" item in Port remaining content from the voxpupuli.org OpenVox install page before the microsite is phased out #442 — do it once, link from both).
  • Running your own mirror: rsync://rsync.voxpupuli.org/all and /packages modules (from the March 2025 blog post), approximate size, suggested sync interval, and "comment on planning#41 to be listed".
  • Link the new page from the repository section of install_linux (8.x and 9.x) and from openvox_platform.
  • Add a comment on planning#41 pointing at the page once it's live, so future mirror offers land somewhere that gets published.

Open questions

  • Which mirrors, if any, do the maintainers want to recommend rather than just list? Rackspace's geo-DNS is the closest thing to a CDN today.
  • Should the page mention the pending Fastly application (planning#50) or wait until it resolves?
  • Do we want a lightweight liveness check (a scheduled workflow that HEADs one file per mirror) so the table doesn't rot?
