Description

In this PR, the 0.5 (0p50) and 1.0 (1p00) degree atmospheric products are removed from GFSv17. This involves the following changes:

  • GLOBAL_ATMOS_PRODUCTS - remove 0.5 and 1.0 degree products (GFS only)
  • GFS_ATMOS_GEMPAK - remove 0.5 and 1.0 degree gempak files
  • GFS_ATMOS_PGRB2_SPEC_NPOESS - switch the upstream data files from pres at 0.5 degree to pres at 0.25 degree. The name of this task is also updated to gfs_npoess_pgrb2_0p25deg (it was gfs_npoess_pgrb2_0p5deg).
  • Removal of the GFS_ATMOS_GEMPAK_META and GFS_ATMOS_GEMPAK_META_NCDC_UPAPGIF tasks which depend on the 1.0 degree gempak data files.

This change has been advertised in the PNS, and a script to generate the lower resolution output has been made available for users who still need it. PR #5213 was recently reverted because it led to failures in the archive jobs with the real-time parallel that were not caught during testing - and those have now been resolved.

Resolves issue #5211

Type of change

  • Bug fix (fixes something broken)
  • New feature (adds functionality)
  • Maintenance (code refactor, clean-up, new CI test, etc.)

Change characteristics

  • Is this change expected to change outputs (e.g. value changes to existing outputs, new files stored in COM, files removed from COM, filename changes, additions/subtractions to archives)? YES
    • GFS
    • GEFS
    • SFS
    • GCAFS
  • Is this a breaking change (a change in existing functionality)? YES
  • Does this change require a documentation update? Most likely yes
  • Does this change require an update to any of the following submodules? NO
    • EMC verif-global
    • GDAS
    • GFS-utils
    • GSI
    • GSI-monitor
    • GSI-utils
    • UFS-utils
    • UFS-weather-model
    • wxflow

How has this been tested?

  • Cloned and built on WCOSS2
  • Ben ran a high resolution test and all tasks completed successfully, including the archive jobs. comroot and expdir are located in /lfs/h2/emc/ptmp/Benjamin.Blake/gfsv17_test2 on Dogwood.
  • Jessica ran the generate_workflows with the -G option and archiving enabled - the path to RUNTESTS is here:

…ess_0p5 (#5287)

# Description
PR #5272 was merged into dev/gfs.v17 last week to address issue #5211
and the changes were running successfully in the GFSv17 real-time
parallel prior to the WCOSS2 maintenance. However it was discovered that
one of the ecflow task names was not updated. The
jgfs_atmos_gempak_pgrb2_spec_npoess_0p5 task now uses the 0.25 degree
files, and it has been renamed to
jgfs_atmos_gempak_pgrb2_spec_npoess_0p25 for clearness/consistency. Note
that the Rocoto task name was already updated from npoess_pgrb2_0p5deg
to npoess_pgrb2_0p25deg. Furthermore, an extra (unused) version of the
jgfs_atmos_gempak_pgrb2_spec_npoess_0p5.ecf script is deleted, and the
ecflow task name is updated accordingly inside gfs_prod.def.
