fix: unify session archive progress and server scoping - #612
danljungstrom wants to merge 17 commits into
Conversation
A session-scoped killSession relay only returned "requested"; when the runner then exited without sending its runtime-activity close (old or hung runners), the plain socket disconnect left session.active true until the 10-minute presence timeout, so archive kept answering 409 session-active and the UI's 75s archive-after-stop loop failed. Record an accepted killSession on the local target socket and close that socket's publisher through the existing fenced close when it disconnects, then publish the same inactive lifecycle update as an explicit stop. Plain disconnects are unchanged; a resumed runner supersedes the fenced close. The Redis cross-instance relay path still settles via the presence timeout. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Archiving a running session stops it first and then retries the archive, which can take many seconds with no visible feedback. Track a per-session archiving flag on the session-list renderable, owned by the stop/archive flow, so every entry point (row menu, swipe, header menu, info screen, bulk) shows an "archiving…" status, disables archive actions, and ignores a second archive of the same session while one is in flight. When the stop reports the session process is not found, proceed to archive instead of failing with "Session not found". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

With the Redis streams adapter, a killSession relayed from one instance can reach a runner whose socket and publisher registration live on another instance. The relaying instance could not mark that socket, so the session stayed active until the presence timeout. The relaying instance now emits a server-side event with the target socket id; the owning instance marks its local socket as stop-requested so the runner's disconnect closes its publisher. The receiver is registered only when the cluster adapter is enabled. Covered by a two-node redis-streams integration test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Remove request-acknowledgement and disconnect inference. Keep acknowledged publisher close and proven machine stop as the lifecycle owners, and cover both through real socket and SQLite regressions. Co-authored-by: danljungstrom <danljungstrom@users.noreply.github.com>
Keep archive admission, pending state and completion under the sessions domain. Pushed additive refinements in 6789dd7 and 39da9a6; merged current dev without rewriting the author's commits. The current head is 52447b5. Thanks @danljungstrom for the archive progress implementation and the incident timeline. The visible feedback and missing-runner archive attempt make sense. The backend assumption needed correcting: an encrypted RPC reply can also contain an error, and even an accepted stop is not proof that the runner terminated. The accepted-kill/disconnect marker and cross-instance relay are removed. Existing acknowledged runtime close and fenced, proven daemon stop remain the only relevant owners of inactivity. No reserve/commit relay protocol was added. The existing review findings were re-derived and addressed:
Validation observed so far: focused UI store/flow/action/bulk/account/subscription/server-scope regressions pass; UI typecheck and server build pass. All five socket cases pass with real SQLite and Redis, including the two-server close and negative opaque/rejected/request-only reply cases. Mounted UI suites, browser validation and current-head CI are still pending; some broader local UI attempts hit cold-import timeouts and are not counted as passes. The 0.3 intent port is also in progress, not complete. @coderabbitai full review Please review this head, particularly the canonical termination owner and server-scoped UI lifecycle. The conflict with live dev was an import-only overlap; both canonical helpers are preserved in be93a39. Current-head CI is running: https://github.com/happier-dev/happier/actions/runs/39432866831. The final info-screen harness correction is f30e8ff. Mounted UI validation now passes the full info-screen suite (51 cases), plus header/account/pending-hook/scoped-writer coverage (47 cases), and the UI typecheck passes before the latest target merge. The merged activity/attention corridor and its typecheck are being rechecked. The 27 existing CLI stop tests also pass. Local browser attempts failed in UI setup before executing the archive action; CI browser results are still needed. A scope limitation is explicit in the description: a runner that exits without acknowledged close, whose death the daemon cannot prove, can still leave archive failing while the server considers it active. The PR does not claim to cure that absence-of-proof case. The 0.3 port remains blocked before its required RED run by executor synchronization; production has not been ported yet. @greptile review Please review this current head, including its integration with the merged session activity and attention changes. CodeRabbit's new profile-ID finding is being checked against the existing real selection/profile producers; the evidence reply is on that thread. Posted on behalf of @leeroybrun. |

Add the exact existing Italian settings label to the per-locale intentional shared-term policy. The CI integrity check failed on the unchanged target label; the focused integrity suite now passes. Treccani records feedback as an Italian loanword: https://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/feedback/

Current head is 74d47da. The additive refinements preserve archive admission/progress through identity discovery and recover stalled archive requests through the existing HTTP cancellation owners. The placement-rebuild suggestion was re-derived against the canonical builder and current callers; both real archive/unarchive placement regressions pass without an extra rebuild. The request lifecycle passed 36 focused and 65 adjacent tests plus the native TypeScript check. Both failures from the previous complete CI attempt were corrected and validated: the Italian loanword allowlist and the auth identity test's obsolete internal persistence mocks. CI on this exact head is running; the archive browser interaction is now selected by the smoke suite. The 0.3 intent port is still in progress. The limitation about a runner exiting without acknowledged close or daemon death proof remains explicit in the PR description. Please review the current head and the addressed thread evidence. @coderabbitai review Posted on behalf of @leeroybrun. |

Classify the archive-owned deadline consistently across header and body aborts. Return its stable code without raw clock text, and reuse the existing translated archive error at single and bulk action surfaces. Validation: six timeout cases and the bulk fallback failed before correction; 133 tests across six relevant files passed afterward. Package typecheck and composed browser validation remain pending.
Normalize snapshots at the shared publisher, retire equivalent alias buckets, and preserve stable row projections for legacy warm snapshots. Keep full profile identity facts in concurrent target resolution and retain the warm snapshot when an equivalent connection is replaced after identity discovery. Validation: three intended regressions failed before correction; 18 focused tests, six concurrent producer tests and 101 adjacent tests passed. A stale settings fixture was migrated to real profiles; its final check and package typecheck remain pending shared worker admission.
Account for the archive cancellation signal in existing scope assertions. Use the visible accessible status indicator instead of a subtitle omitted by minimal row density, and drain routed requests during browser cleanup. Validation: hosted failure trace confirms the pending working indicator and archiving label are present. Both component suites pass in the 133-test focused batch. Local composed browser validation remains blocked before the test body by a cold export timeout on the shared worker.

Source validation is complete for dd07d26: CI attempt 1 passed, the 47-context check rollup is successful, CodeRabbit approved this exact head, Greptile reports no new actionable issues, and no review threads remain unresolved. GitHub reports MERGEABLE / CLEAN. The actual archive interaction passed in UI E2E shard 4, including pending progress during the held request, the bulk result and row removal. The local native UI check and remaining cache/settings regressions also passed. Earlier local cold export/Metro failures occurred before the test body and were not treated as successful validation. The 0.3 intent port remains incomplete: its evolved owners have the core changes, but remaining refinements and validation need a generated worker sync conflict cleared, canonical dependency repair and current declaration builds. The requested source-plus-port task is therefore not complete. No merge was performed. The retained limitation remains explicit: a runner exit without acknowledged close or daemon-proven death can still outlast the existing archive retry window; no request/disconnect inference was reintroduced. Posted on behalf of @leeroybrun. |
Summary
Archiving shows shared "archiving..." feedback immediately after confirmation across the session row, header, info screen, composer and bulk actions. Duplicate attempts share one transient operation keyed by server and session. Missing runner control permits one archive attempt, but the server must still establish that the session is inactive.
Why
Archive is serial: stop the runner, then POST archive, retrying
409 session-activeevery 200 ms for up to 75 s. Nothing was visible until the whole flow finished.Observed on the dev server (2026-10-19): a mobile archive fell back to the runner's
killSession. The runner exited about 10 s later, but its socket disconnect did not clearsession.active. Only the explicit close event, a daemon-proven stop, or the 10-minute presence timeout do that. The archive got 409 about 200 times and failed with "Failed to archive session". A manual retry through the daemon stop then succeeded in 49 ms.Changes
docs/backend-architecture.md.Validation
Current-head CI for
dd07d26passed. The check rollup is successful, CodeRabbit approved this exact head, and all review threads are resolved. Greptile reviewed the same head with no new actionable issues. The PR is mergeable with a clean merge state; it has not been merged. The archive browser interaction was actually selected and passed in UI E2E shard 4: the held archive request displayed the accessible Archiving indicator, then completed with the expected bulk result and row removal. Earlier local cold export/Metro startup attempts stopped before the test body; they are not counted as passes.
The latest local source batch passed the native UI typecheck, 133 tests across six timeout/action/component files, 18 focused cache tests, six real concurrent producer cases, 101 adjacent cases, and the three repaired settings-fixture tests. Earlier validated source batches passed the server build and all five socket integration cases with real SQLite and Redis, including acknowledged close across two instances and negative cases for encrypted/rejected/request-only replies followed by ordinary disconnect.
The required 0.3 intent port is partially implemented but not yet fully validated. Its remaining checks need canonical dependency repair and rebuilt declarations after a generated dependency-repair scratch directory is cleared from the worker sync. Do not treat source readiness as completion of the port.
Notes
A runner that exits without acknowledged close, and whose death cannot be proven by the daemon, can still leave the server active beyond the existing archive retry window. This PR does not claim to cure that exact degraded case.
This change does not infer termination from a request, retry a stop after a successor may have resumed, or add a second termination protocol. The existing runtime-close and proven daemon-stop owners remain authoritative. A missing runner while the server still considers the session active remains an explicit archive failure rather than an unsafe inactive transition.
The original incident timeline above is the author's diagnosis. The refinements preserve the visible archive intent while correcting ownership and termination assumptions.
