fix(cli-claude): keep agents waiting on their own background work active - #609
Conversation
Claude Code 2.1.302 reports an Agent `completed` each time it stops, including when it stops to wait on backgrounded work it still owns (SDK `task_started` rows with `parent_task_id`). The provider activity ledger treated that interim stop as final, so the Agent's work after it woke was dropped from runtime activity and the session showed "online" while the agent was still working. The ledger now records each task's parent. An Agent that stops while a child is still active, or while a child Agent is itself waiting on its own children, is held as awaiting children; only its own typed SDK `task_progress` reactivates it until its next terminal. Hook `SubagentStop` progress cannot reactivate it, so an Agent that never wakes cannot hold activity open. Refs happier-dev#534 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A failed, stopped, or killed Agent never wakes, so marking it as awaiting children let a late typed `task_progress` revive it and hold runtime activity open. Only a `completed` terminal can be an interim stop. Also cover that hook `SubagentStop` progress leaves an awaiting Agent inactive, including after its children settle when it never wakes. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winReconcile a late child link with the completed parent.
When the hook starts a child, the child record is active but has no
parentTaskId. If the parent then reportscompleted, hasActiveChildfinds no linked child. The later typedtask_startedadds the parent link only to the child. The parent remains non-awaiting, so its typedtask_progressis ignored after the child completes and the active count can reach zero while the parent is working.Store the terminal status and, when a typed start adds a parent link, mark only a
completedparent asawaitingChildren. Do not apply this to failed or stopped parents.Suggested fix

Thanks @danljungstrom. I reviewed this together with the v0.3 port in #622 and pushed The waiting-child approach belongs in the existing activity ledger and preserves the confirmed-process-stop rules from #535. One lifecycle gap needed a follow-up: after an interim completed result, a later failure or stop was ignored and delayed typed progress could reactivate the Agent. The ledger now treats that later stop/failure as final while preserving duplicate completed results. Regressions cover typed failure/killed results, TaskStop and StopFailure. Validation: all 42 ledger tests and the CLI typecheck pass. The broader run passed 156 tests but hit two timeouts; the standalone compact case passed in isolation. The remaining legacy query test times out before provider startup on both this refinement and the original PR head, so I am not counting that path as validated. Current-head CI and the corresponding v0.3 refinement remain in progress; the live provider recipe has not been replayed for this follow-up. @coderabbitai review Posted on behalf of @leeroybrun. |
Port the complete intent of #609 and #622 through the query-owned activity ledger. Keep the SDK query observing interim completion, and settle later failure or stop evidence without allowing delayed progress to revive the Agent. …e (v0.3) Claude Code 2.1.302 reports an Agent `completed` each time it stops, including an interim stop while it waits on its own background shell or nested Agent. The 0.3 ledger settled the Agent and the session stopped reading and disposed the turn query, so the Agent was killed and the session showed idle while work continued. - providerActivity: read parent_task_id from typed task_started and keep the parent link across hook/typed records; a completed Agent with a live child is kept as awaitingChildren (failed/killed never wait); only its own typed task_progress wakes it (SubagentStop cannot); provider stop releases it; new hasUnsettledProviderTasks(ownerScope). - session: keep the turn query open while unsettled tasks remain. - docs: claude-feature-matrix notes the interim-stop behaviour. Problem
Claude Code 2.1.302 reports an Agent
completed(task_updated+task_notification) every time it stops, including when it stops to wait on background work it owns (a subagent's backgrounded Bash arrives as
task_startedwithparent_task_id). The provider activity ledger treated that interim stop as final,so once the Agent woke and continued, runtime activity dropped to 0 and the session showed "online"
while an agent was still working.
Fix (single owner:
createClaudeProviderActivityLedger)task_startedrows carryparentTaskId; every ledger record keeps it, including when the hooklaunch registers the task first.
children), it is held as
awaitingChildrenand does not count as active.task_progressreactivates it, until its next terminal. HookSubagentStopprogress cannot, so an Agent that never wakes cannot hold activity open (no regressionof the "2 background agents" stuck count fixed in fix(claude): abandon provider tasks orphaned by observer loss #535).
Validation
vitest run src/backends/claude: all ledger/remote suites green; unrelated model-metadata timeoutsunder host load pass in isolation.
yarn workspace @happier-dev/cli typecheck: pass.stopped, woke, ran a 150s foreground command. Server projection stayed
active(1–2) throughout andwent
idleright after the Agent's final report. Previously it dropped to 0 during the post-wake work. Not covered
