Summary

Replace Nginx with Caddy as the default HTTP server in the production container, simplifying HTTP configuration while preserving the existing application architecture.

Changes

  • Replace Nginx with Caddy in the Wolfi-based runtime image.
  • Configure Caddy to serve static assets and proxy requests to Laravel Octane (port 8090) and Reverb WebSockets (port 8081).
  • Preserve the existing HTTP port (8080), gzip compression, and 512 MiB request body limit.
  • Update Pebble service definitions and container initialization for Caddy.
  • Maintain rootless operation using writable directories under /tmp/caddy.
  • Preserve nginx as a legacy role alias for backward compatibility.
  • Pass .env variables to the backend container in Docker Compose.
  • Update documentation and remove obsolete Nginx configuration.

Compatibility

  • Existing exposed ports remain unchanged.
  • The legacy nginx container role continues to work, but now starts Caddy.
  • No changes to Laravel Octane, Reverb, or application functionality are intended.

Testing

  • Verify production image builds and starts successfully.
  • Verify static assets and application routing.
  • Verify WebSocket connections through Reverb.
  • Verify compatibility with existing container roles.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Runtime
    • The production web server now uses Caddy to serve the app and static files, and route application and WebSocket requests.
    • The web server supports gzip compression and accepts request bodies up to 512 MiB.
    • The legacy nginx runtime role remains available as an alias for Caddy.
  • Configuration
    • APP_DEBUG now defaults to false, and APP_URL defaults to http://127.0.0.1:8080.
    • Docker Compose loads environment variables from .env; copy .env.example to .env before starting Compose.
  • Documentation
    • Updated deployment and reverse-proxy guidance to reflect the current runtime.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The production runtime replaces Nginx with Caddy. The image, service setup, and documentation reflect the change. The Caddyfile configures request routing and static-file serving. The example environment changes APP_DEBUG and APP_URL, and Docker Compose loads .env for the app service.

Changes

Caddy runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Install and wire Caddy
build/base/runtime/apko.yaml, Dockerfile, init/container-entrypoint.sh, init/pebble/001-cattr.yaml, CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/backend/README.md, docs/frontend/README.md
The runtime image installs Caddy and copies its configuration. The entrypoint and Pebble configuration set up Caddy directories and service roles. Production and proxy documentation now refer to Caddy or a generic reverse proxy.
Configure request routing
runtime/caddy/Caddyfile, runtime/nginx/conf.d/app.conf, runtime/nginx/nginx.conf
The Caddyfile configures the listener and routes WebSocket, PHP, static-file, and other requests. The two Nginx configuration files are removed.

Local environment configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set local environment defaults
.env.example, docker-compose.yml
APP_DEBUG now defaults to false, APP_URL uses port 8080, and the Compose app service loads .env.

require copying .env.example to .env first; keep the required env_file
configuration unchanged.

Review comments at @runtime/caddy/Caddyfile:
- Around line 19-22: Update the @websocket matcher to match Connection and
Upgrade header values case-insensitively, so valid casing variations are handled
by the WebSocket route rather than falling through to the Octane proxy.
- Around line 8-11: Add the X-Frame-Options SAMEORIGIN response header to the
Caddyfile header block alongside the existing Server and Via removals, so the
authenticated Vue application can only be framed by same-origin pages. Leave
external TLS configuration and CSP unchanged.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Set X-Content-Type-Options on responses.

Add X-Content-Type-Options nosniff to this header block. The new static-file server and proxied responses otherwise lack this MIME-sniffing protection. The frame policy is already present; this request does not call for HSTS on the HTTP-only listener or an untested CSP. Caddy supports setting the header here. (caddyserver.com)

Based on learnings, Caddy configurations that serve static files or proxy responses should include X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff.
