I have transferred this issue to the WinMerge repository.

WinMerge's folder comparison view currently uses a single-pane layout. Although this differs from some other file comparison tools, many users find it works well once they get used to it.

Adding a dual-pane view has been discussed before. However, we would want to keep the existing single-pane view and allow switching between the two modes, which makes the implementation considerably more complex than it may appear.
